Bloomington School Spotlight: Oak Grove Middle School

August’s Bloomington School of the Month, Oak Grove Middle School, serves 823 students in grades 6 through 8. With 53 full-time teachers, there is one teacher for every 15 students. Oak Grove has the second best student/teacher ratio in the district. Scroll to the end of this blog post for 2015 back-to-school information.

Special Programs

Oak Grove offers a large number of extracurricular opportunities to students. These include a number of clubs, from the art club to the drama club to the Young Women’s Leadership Forum. Activities at school include the Homework Connection, Jazz Band, Student Council and more.

If your child is interested in athletics he or she will find a range of sports at Oak Grove. These include:

  • Soccer - Girls, Grade 8
  • Track - Girls & Boys, Grades 6-8
  • Volleyball - Girls, Grade 8
  • Wrestling - Boys, Grades 6-8

Oak Grove Ratings and Test Scores

Parents rate Oak Grove highly, saying they appreciate what they call the school’s “highly professional teachers.” School ratings site awards Oak Grove three out of five stars and gives it seven out of 10.

In 2014, 51 percent of Oak Grove 8th grade students met or exceeded the state standards for math on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments Series III (MCA-III) exams. The state average for 8th grade students is 59.7.

On the reading portion, 58.7 percent score proficient or better while the state average is 55.7. Finally, 43.9 percent of the 8th graders meet state standards for science. The state average is 45 percent.
