SommerFest is coming to town this summer and it’s going to be an awesome celebration. It’s an annual event that celebrates Cuba through intimate chamber music experiences, Viennese favorites, dancing, drinks and music events. The event starts on July 5th and runs until August 1st with the kickoff celebration “Celebrate Cuba!” and ending with the Opera Finale: Madame Butterfly.

For a month long, you can experience SommerFest’s various celebratory performances and entertainment including orchestra performances, pianists and more. Here is a look at this exciting event and what some of the highlights will be.

Celebrate Cuba! – 1111 Nicollet Mall

The event will start off with Celebrate Cuba! with the Minnesota Orchestra. The musical exchange with Cuba starts in May with the historic Havana concerts and you can see it on Sunday, July 5th and 2pm. You’ll love watching the 23-voice Cuban choir, Coro Entrevoces, join the Minnesota Orchestra to put on a bold and brilliant performance incorporating both cultures. Tickets range from $25-$60 and it takes place at Orchestra Hall.

Strauss: The Waltz King  - 1111 Nicollet Mall

Another great performance takes place on July 24th at 8pm and July 26th at 2pm with the Strauss: The Waltz King. Check out the Minnesota Orchestra with conductor Andrew Litton, flute players Adam Kuenzel and Greg Milliren and tuba player Steven Campbell perform Vienna’s Waltz King with a fantasty-medley of greatest hits from Bizet’s masterpiece “Carmen” and a lyrical Tuba Concerto.

Opera Finale: Madame Butterfly - 1111 Nicollet Mall

The finale to the SommerFest event is the Opera Finale: Madame Butterfly, a complete opera in concert. Tickets will cost $30-$80 and features 2 hours and 40 minutes of the Minnesota Orchestra performing the story of Puccini Madame Butterfly. The story shows a young Japanese girl in love with an American naval lieutenant Pinkerton and the two get married before having a child. When he leaves town in promises to return, he does so after many years with a surprise.

Check out these amazing performances by the Minnesota Orchestra along with Chamber Music: Rossini and Mozart, Gershwin’s Piano Concerto, Igudesman and Joo: BIG Nightmare Music and much more. It will be a summer of music, dancing and fun!
