Hillcrest Community School
Hillcrest Community School serves 440 children in grades K through 4. Students are selected from the entire Bloomington School District via a lottery system and students receive free transportation to and from school.
Hillcrest’s rigorous curriculum is evident in the high scores the students garner on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment-II (MCA-II) exams. While test scores don’t tell the whole story about a school, they act as a barometer of sorts.
Ninety-one percent of Hillcrest 4th grade students scored proficient or better in reading on the MCA-ll exams. The state average is 75 percent. Eighty-eight percent scored proficient or better in mathematics, while the state average is 77 percent.
These scores have led the school to be graded 9 out of 10 possible stars at the school ratings website GreatSchools.org.
Another method of measuring a school’s performance is by seeking out information on awards received by the school.
Hillcrest was named a No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School in 2007 and both a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and a Congressional District School of the Month in 1996.
