Bloomington MN Historic Real Estate & Homes
Say the term “historic homes” to many people and they instantly envision Victorian-era structures or those lovely Queen Anne style homes of the late 1800s. Did you know, however, that the term covers homes that were built as recently as 50 years ago?
It’s true – at least that is one criterion used to judge a house for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. That’s good enough for us, especially when discussing historic homes in Bloomington, Minnesota. Out of respect for our friends in their 50s, however, we choose to call these homes “vintage.”
Although you’ll find half of the city’s homes built before the 1980s and half built after, the median year built in Bloomington is 1983. Yes, Bloomington homes are a youthful bunch, but you can still find a wonderful selection of vintage homes, built in the 1950s and 1960s. And, in case you’re wondering, mid-20th century architecture appeals to a wide variety of homebuyers
Just what are these styles? Most popular among home builders and buyers in the 1950s and 1960s were ranch-style homes, commonly called “ramblers.”
Ramblers are uniquely American. In fact, the first rambler was built in San Diego, Calif. in 1932, where it was originally dubbed the ranch-style home, or “rancher. Today, what these homes are called depends on where in the country you live. Here in Minnesota we call them “ramblers,” but in California they’re still known as “ranchers.”
Typical ramblers have a horizontal layout -- either L- or U-shaped. They feature a gabled roof and lots of large windows. The interior is rambling (thus the nickname), with fewer interior walls than older homes.
The beauty of purchasing a rambler is that, because of its simplicity, the home is easy to update and modify, or rehab.
Bloomington has come a long way since Gideon Pond built the area’s first home in 1856, and although you won’t find many homes that date back further than the 20th century, our city’s vintage homes for sale are amazing, and well worth touring if you’re in the market for an older home.
Whether you long for a circa 1954 classic in Ackerman’s Riverview Addition or your thoughts turn to a rambler in Shepherd Hills, if it’s listed for sale in Bloomington, you’ll find it here on BloomingtonHomesForSale.com.
